He became the youngest African American crypto billionaire and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/03\/28\/trump-pardons-three-founders-bitmex-cryptocurrency\/82708964007\/\" target=\"_blank\">received a pardon <\/a>from President Trump after BitMEX\u2019s anti-money laundering failures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c$BTC on sale,\u201d Hayes <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CryptoHayes\/status\/1979175306653999171\">posted<\/a> on X today. \u201cIf this US regional banking wobble grows to a crisis be ready for a 2023-like bailout. And then go shopping assuming you have spare capital.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arthur Hayes\u2019 fund details<\/h2>\n<p>The new fund represents a bit of a pivot for Maelstrom. While the firm\u2019s previous venture investments were token-focused, the new vehicle will concentrate solely on equity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t artificially inflate value with a token that isn\u2019t used in the off-chain world,\u201d said Akshat Vaidya, Maelstrom\u2019s co-founder and managing partner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/news\/ben-allen-receives-maelstrom-bitcoin-developer-grant-to-advance-payjoin-tech\">targeting cash-generating<\/a>, off-chain companies, the fund will acquire businesses with clearer valuations and sustainable growth potential.<\/p>\n<p>Maelstrom plans to structure each acquisition through special-purpose vehicles (SPVs), with the fund as the anchor investor, Bloomberg reported.<\/p>\n<p>Once acquired, these companies will undergo operational improvements, including management upgrades and growth acceleration, before being sold to larger investors within four to five years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Vaidya, the strategy appeals to investors who want exposure to the high-growth, high-cash-flow crypto sector but lack the in-house expertise to manage such investments directly.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes\u2019 reemergence comes amid a broader slowdown in private equity activity within crypto. Deal-making in the sector has fallen sharply since 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/business\/ftx-and-bitcoin-is-good-and-bad\">following the collapse<\/a> of Sam Bankman-Fried\u2019s FTX.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Maelstrom fund will be registered in the United States and plans to attract a diverse set of backers, including crypto investors, family offices, and institutional players such as pension funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vaidya said the fund aims for a first close by March 31, 2026, with a full raise completed by September 2026.
