Public companies acquired approximately 131,000 BTC in Q2 2025\u2014an 18% increase from the previous quarter\u2014compared to an 8% uptick, or 111,000 BTC, among ETFs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe institutional buyer who is getting exposure to Bitcoin through the ETFs are not buying for the same reason as those public companies who are basically trying to accumulate Bitcoin to increase shareholder value at the end of the day,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/01\/public-companies-bought-more-bitcoin-than-etfs-did-for-the-third-quarter-in-a-row.html\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Nick Marie, head of research at Ecoinometrics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In April alone, public company holdings rose 4% while ETFs increased just 2%. \u201cThey don\u2019t really care if the price is high or low, they care about growing their Bitcoin treasury so they look more attractive to the proxy buyers,\u201d Marie said. \u201cIt\u2019s not so much driven by the macro trend or the sentiment, it\u2019s for different reasons. So it becomes a different kind of mechanism that can push Bitcoin forward.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the surge in corporate adoption, ETFs remain the largest entity holders of Bitcoin, controlling more than 1.4 million BTC\u2014about 6.8% of the fixed supply cap. Public companies now hold around 855,000 BTC, or 4%.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some analysts have linked the surge in corporate participation to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/news\/president-trump-executive-director-says-u-s-could-use-tariff-revenue-to-build-strategic-bitcoin-reserve\">favorable policy shift<\/a> under the Trump administration. In March, Trump signed an executive order for a U.S. Bitcoin reserve, signaling strong federal support for Bitcoin. The last quarter where ETFs led in BTC accumulation was Q3 2024, prior to Trump\u2019s reelection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p>BREAKING:  President Trump signs executive order officially creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bitcoin?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">#Bitcoin<\/a> Strategic Reserve.<br \/> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MiyTAbRkE2\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/MiyTAbRkE2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bitcoin Magazine (@BitcoinMagazine) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BitcoinMagazine\/status\/1897804800307208442?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">March 7, 2025<\/a>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Recent moves include <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/?s=gamestop\">GameStop<\/a>\u2019s entry into Bitcoin holdings, KindlyMD\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/news\/david-bailey-and-bitcoin-native-holding-company-nakamoto-announce-merger-with-kindlymd-to-establish-bitcoin-treasury\">merger<\/a> with David Bailey\u2019s Bitcoin treasury company, Nakamoto, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/news\/anthony-pomplianos-procap-btc-buys-another-1208-bitcoin-total-holdings-reach-4932-btc\">ProCap<\/a>\u2019s launch of a Bitcoin treasury strategy ahead of its public debut via SPAC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still leading the pack is <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/news\/strategy-acquires-531-9-million-in-bitcoin-now-holds-597325-btc\">Strategy<\/a> (formerly MicroStrategy), which holds 597,000 BTC. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be very hard to catch Strategy\u2019s scale,\u201d said Ben Werkman, CIO at Swan Bitcoin. \u201cThey\u2019re going to be the preferred landing spot for institutional capital.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Marie believes the current pace of corporate Bitcoin adoption may not last forever, suggesting this could be a temporary opportunity. \u201cYou can think about this wave as a bunch of companies that are trying to benefit from this arbitrage,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, Werkman sees long-term value in the model. \u201cWhat people really like about these companies is that they can do something spot Bitcoin holders can\u2019t: go out and accumulate more Bitcoin on your behalf,\u201d he explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Disclosure: Nakamoto is in partnership with Bitcoin Magazine\u2019s parent company BTC Inc to build the first global network of Bitcoin treasury companies, where BTC Inc provides certain marketing services to Nakamoto.
