Robert Mitchnick Discusses BlackRock\u2019s Bitcoin ETF IBIT Success On Bloomberg<\/a><\/p>\n

Today, the Head of Digital Assets of BlackRock<\/a> Robert Mitchnick, at the Bloomberg ETF IQ<\/a>, talked about what\u2019s really driving the surge in Bitcoin ETFs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of things coming together. Out of the gate was retail and investor demand\u2026\u201d said Mitchnick. \u201cNow, more recently, we\u2019ve seen just steady progress of more wealth advisor adoption, more institutional adoption. It\u2019s been a mix of people who it\u2019s the first time that they\u2019ve invested in anything in the crypto space. And then on the other hand, you have lots of people who\u2019ve been invested in Bitcoin for a long time and they\u2019re taking advantage of the ETP wrapper.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it comes to institutional adoption, Mitchnick says we\u2019re still early. ETF approvals usually take years, but some firms are fast-tracking the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve seen that fast tracked by a number of firms, and we talk about fast tracking,\u201d stated Mitchnick. \u201cWe\u2019re talking about, you know, quarters, not months. And slowly but surely, you\u2019ve seen, I think, an acceleration, particularly in the last couple of months of more notable firms lowering barriers, granting approvals to their advisors to use these.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bitcoin<\/a>\u2019s volatility has declined recently, making it more appealing for institutions seeking diversification. However, it remains volatile, but its risk and return profile differs from traditional assets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no question it\u2019s relatively novel technology,\u201d Mitchnick commented. \u201cEven though the volatility has come down, it\u2019s still volatile, but at the same time its risk and return drivers are markedly different from most of the rest of the assets in a traditional portfolio, and that\u2019s important. And so when institutions are looking at this, they\u2019re heavily focused on that correlation and whether it\u2019s zero or even in some periods negative, because then the portfolio construction case is very compelling to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

About a dozen Bitcoin ETFs currently compete in the market, and demand remains strong.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, a lot of them have been, you know, very successful, too,\u201d stated Mitchnick. \u201cObviously, it has been the leader in the category by a fair margin. But there\u2019s been such demand that, you know, it\u2019s been exciting and there\u2019s lots of products in the space and that\u2019s a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
