SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce Says \u201cWe Can\u2019t Ignore It\u201d in Bitcoin 2025 Fireside Talk\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

At the Bitcoin 2025 Conference<\/a> this morning, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commissioner Hester Peirce <\/a>took the stage with Fold\u2019s General Counsel Hailey Lennon<\/a> for a fireside chat that pulled no punches.<\/p>\n

Opening with a question about enforcement priorities since the change in administration, Lennon asked, \u201cWhat are the current enforcement priorities, if any, in the digital asset space?\u201d Peirce acknowledged the public\u2019s frustration: \u201cSome people have taken the fact that we haven\u2019t moved forward with a ton of these cases as inaction\u2014but there\u2019s a lot to digest.\u201d She stressed that the agency is actively bringing in outside perspectives, stating, \u201cThat\u2019s really the way to get to good rules.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

A core theme of the conversation was regulatory uncertainty. \u201cOne complaint I\u2019ve had,\u201d Peirce said, \u201cis that in an environment of regulatory uncertainty, it\u2019s much harder to identify bad actors\u2014and it gives them more room to operate. Meanwhile, it pushes legitimate actors out of the U.S. or out of the industry entirely. We need to create a good environment for the good actors and a bad one for the bad actors.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Peirce also addressed her recent tweet hinting at disclosure requirements for projects potentially considered securities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When asked about the explosion of memecoins and speculative tokens, Peirce didn\u2019t hold back: \u201cIf you\u2019re expecting to buy a memecoin and become a billionaire\u2014buyer beware. Be an adult. If you want to speculate, go for it, but if something goes wrong, don\u2019t come complaining to the government.\u201d This confirms the value, and security of Bitcoin<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She emphasized the importance of community participation, noting that \u201cgovernment works for the people,\u201d and encouraged attendees to weigh in on issues like surveillance and financial freedom. \u201cIn the United States, we are all about freedom. Freedom to innovate. Your voices are so important for helping us think through these issues.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Peirce\u2019s remarks echo the statements that JD Vance touched on yesterday during his speech<\/a> at the Bitcoin 2025 Conference. They both emphasized that we, the American people, have the power to transform the traditional financial system, and fuel Bitcoin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Discussing Bitcoin\u2019s growing presence<\/a> in traditional finance, Lennon asked whether the SEC is prepared for that convergence. Peirce replied, \u201cWe can\u2019t ignore it. When people are free to use something, it will eventually be incorporated into traditional financial products. We need to think about how it interacts with our regulatory framework\u2014but the key is preserving people\u2019s ability to transfer value on their own terms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Peirce left attendees with a powerful reminder: \u201cYou don\u2019t have to wait for the government. Demand transparency. Learn from failures. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and do better next time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
