Coinbase To Acquire Bitcoin And Crypto Options Platform Deribit For $2.9B<\/a><\/p>\n

Bitcoin and crypto exchange Coinbase<\/a> has agreed to acquire<\/a> derivatives trading platform Deribit for $2.9 billion, marking the largest acquisition in the industry\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Coinbase will acquire Panama-based Deribit, which currently handles a massive volume of global Bitcoin and crypto options trading volume. Subject to regulatory approvals, the acquisition is expected to close in the second half of 2025.<\/p>\n

Under the terms of the agreement, Coinbase<\/a> will pay $700 million in cash and 11 million shares of Coinbase\u2019s Class A common stock, the company said in a\u00a0blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Deribit CEO Luuk Strijers said, \u201cWe\u2019re excited to join forces with Coinbase to power a new era in global crypto derivatives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the leading crypto options platform, we\u2019ve built a strong, profitable business, and this acquisition will accelerate the foundation we laid while providing traders with even more opportunities across spot, futures, perpetuals, and options \u2014 all under one trusted brand.\u201d<\/p>\n

The acquisition comes as institutional investors increasingly seek exposure to crypto derivatives. Deribit reported its\u00a0total trading volumes<\/a>\u00a0in 2024 almost doubled to $1.2 trillion.<\/p>\n

The deal is expected to help Coinbase compete more effectively with offshore exchanges like Binance and OKX, which currently dominate crypto derivatives trading. Deribit\u2019s regulatory licenses in multiple jurisdictions will also support Coinbase\u2019s international expansion plans.<\/p>\n

Following the acquisition<\/a>, Deribit will maintain its current operations and brand while leveraging Coinbase\u2019s technology infrastructure and regulatory framework.<\/p>\n

At press time, Bitcoin trades at $99,488, up 2.62% over the past 24 hours, as the market reacts positively to increased institutional participation in crypto derivatives trading.<\/p>\n
