UK Treasury Secretary Says No To National Bitcoin Reserve<\/a><\/p>\n

Speaking at the Financial Times Digital Asset Summit<\/a> in London on Tuesday, Emma Reynolds, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, emphasized that while the UK aims to become a crypto hub, it will take a different approach from both the U.S. and EU in regulating Bitcoin and crypto.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t think that\u2019s appropriate for our market,\u201d Reynolds said<\/a> regarding a national Bitcoin reserve<\/a>. \u201cWe understand that\u2019s what the U.S. is going for, but that\u2019s not the plan for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement comes as the UK government prepares to implement a new regulatory framework for Bitcoin and crypto by the end of 2025. Rather than adopting the EU\u2019s Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) legislation or following the U.S. reserve<\/a> strategy, the UK plans to regulate within its existing financial services framework.<\/p>\n

Reynolds noted<\/a> that the UK has established a \u201csenior official level working group\u201d with the U.S. to discuss cooperation on Bitcoin and crypto, with a regulatory forum scheduled for June. This follows recent meetings between the UK\u2019s Chancellor of the Exchequer and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.<\/p>\n

The UK\u2019s<\/a> approach focuses on regulating Bitcoin and crypto \u201cwithin the regulatory perimeter that traditional financial services firms operate,\u201d following a \u201csame risk, same regulatory approach\u201d principle.<\/p>\n

Reynolds acknowledged the challenges in regulating certain aspects of Bitcoin and crypto, particularly Bitcoin\u2019s decentralized nature. \u201cThere\u2019s only so much the government can do in that regard,\u201d she said. \u201cWe understand that some of this stuff is a little bit amorphous, and the decentralized stuff is particularly difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

At press time, Bitcoin trades at $93,857, down 0.45% over the past 24 hours, as the market digests the UK\u2019s regulatory stance.<\/p>\n
