At the time, he had two hard drives of the same size: one was blank while the other contained his Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>He mistakenly put the one containing the Bitcoin into a black bin bag, which his then-girlfriend took to the tip. At the time of his loss, his assets \u2013 that he mined in 2009 \u2013 were worth around $1.3 million.<\/p>\n<p>In October, <a href=\"https:\/\/coinjournal.net\/news\/uk-man-sues-council-after-denying-requests-to-dig-for-lost-bitcoin-hard-drive-in-landfill\/\">Howells sued Newport City Council<\/a> for $646 million in damages after being denied access to the landfill due to environmental concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Judge Keyser KC, the Circuit Commercial Judge for Wales, has dismissed Howells\u2019 case, stating that there are no \u201creasonable grounds\u201d for succeeding at a full trial, reports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cj0r0dvgpy0o\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>A 12-year battle<\/h2>\n<p>Upon hearing the decision, Howells said he was \u201cvery upset,\u201d adding \u201cit\u2019s the great British justice system striking again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 12 years, Howells said he has been trying to engage with Newport City Council to recover his lost hard drive, but has been \u201clargely ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A court filing states Howells hard drive is located in Cell 2, Area 2 of the Docksway landfill.
